ACAPULCO, Mexico 19-APR: Humanitarian aid volunteer attacked aboard humanitarian aid boat by armed men.
Sailor John Kanafoski, who has been supporting the re-fit of International Rescue Group's sailing vessel Thunderbird 1
, arrived at her mooring in Puerto Marquez, Acapulco this Tuesday to charge the boat's batteries when three assailants came from below deck and robbed him at gunpoint, stealing all he had with him and his dinghy's outboard motor. Thunderbird 1
is the first boat launched for International Rescue Group (IRG) and deployed as a scout boat for the nonprofit organization's mission to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief to coastal communities. IRG has two other vessels operational in the Caribbean and last year aided Dominica with two medical, water and food missions after the devastation of Tropical Storm Erika. Mr. Kanafoski
was helped by the Mexican Federales and local businesses in the area including generous support from the Acapulco Yacht Club. Thunderbird 1
was in to Puerto Marquez, a small cove within view of Acapulco Bay. Volunteer John Kanafoski has been a valued supporter and caretaker of the 36-foot Albin Stratus yacht while IRG's Captain Lou Rodriguez was away securing a replacement engine.
John is a valued member of IRG and we are trying to find him $1000 to replace his outboard motor - please donate below and mark it "For John Kanafoski".
